delhi 6

from top: ricksaws against the Jama Masjid
middle: pigeons having a sip in the central washing area in the middle of the courtyard
bottom: an imposing view of the 130 ft high minarets and mughal architecture
Delhi has to be one of my favourite cities.beautiful people, beautiful parks and one of the most beautiful parts of it is the Jama Masjid situated in Old Delhi. One of the most interesting aspects of this mosque is that it stands on a high platform, so when you climbing its steps, it really feels you are going to a very special place to meet God. And when you do go past the beautifully carved gates, you are welcomed by a breathtaking expansive view of mughal arhitecture. It took six years to build and it was built by mughal emperor and the connoisseur of beautiful things : Emperor Shah Jahan.
There is almost a festive-like atmosphere in the surrounding areas ouside of the mosque. Shops selling semi precious stones and antiques, gorgeous silver and stone jewellers. It's a really nice way to spend time in Delhi: to just wander around the streets and soak up the local flavour and people. The food and garam garam jalebis are a must especially in winter time.
But i do have one complant against the government and also its people. They don't do enough to upkeep the monuments of India. Many of them are fast becoming neglected, vandalized and eroded by the millions of tourists and locals that flock to see them. They leave behind litter, carve their lovers name in stone and what not. The Taj Mahal isnt the only architectural wonder in India. From Jaipur to Dehli to Rajasthan, there are many beautiful buildings and places that are fast losing their shine. Do something before its too late.
